The same day I read your post I came across:
 
Planning Algorithms, By Steven M. LaValle, Copyright 2006
   Cambridge University Press, 842 pages
   To buy: Cambridge ($63)  Amazon ($46.40) 
The whole thing is online at:

It is an amazingly detailed exploration of all that goes in to the algorithms enabling a robot to deal with worldly interactions. Quite a contrast to the evolutionary network model.
